THE BOWMAN
‘Not just a Speaker.
a functional display of art’
The objective for this project was to create a product whose main purpose is to emit sound. I also had to pick a famous designer educate myself on their design style and apply their approaches to my own product. In my case I took great inspiration from Ross Lovegrove. He has pioneered 3D printing and mold casting techniques. More importantly he would cast a product out of a single mold, products that appeared to have many parts would be one single piece. I planned to showcase this through unified material usage.
Ross Lovegrove enjoys utilizing perforation, in doing so he visually and physically lightens up objects. I planned to do so by experimenting with different perforations and lattice structures. After exploring all possible sound emission products I was set on the idea of sculptural speakers.
I wanted to create a speaker that acts not only as a sound emission device but also a work of art that is customizable to suit any house environment. I did 380 ideation sketches exploring possible speaker forms on paper. This was followed by 30 foam models so I could physically understand the form in my hands. I then built a physical prototype before lastly refining my idea through renders.

KEY TAKEAWAY
This project taught me to be inspired and how to implement a design style different to my own. It also taught me grit when it came to ideation and physical form exploration. having to complete 380 ideation sketches and 30 foam models over two separate weekends was a challenge I had to overcome. The biggest take away from this project was understanding the importance of physically feeling the form you create. Distancing yourself from 3D software and putting yourself in the physical realm of the consumer.
